The end. First of all, the venture into room 101 where Winston betrays the 1 person he still cares about; Just because he does not want a rat to eat his face. Personally I would have let the rat do it so I would be able to die knowing that I am the only sane person still left on earth. However if I was willing to let a rat eat my face to let the world know that I am sane then how would I be insane to put Julia in my place and live. Except the problem with that is that I would be living a life that is not mine, but one controlled entirely by the party. For instance look how Winston ended up. All he does is drink disgusting gin and play chess against himself. I would rather die then have to live the rest of my life that way. So in the end I would still allow the rat to eat me because it is somehow the more sane of the two options that I would have to endure. This book was very interesting and well written, it has shown me that we are not a lot smarter, or advances in the English language than people 50 years ago. The end.

10 The end x 2(done for effect, or something)
January 21, 20099 Physco Torture: 2+2=5
January 21, 2009O’Briens trickery and betrayal of Winston was one of the more shocking but expected parts of this novel for me. When he agreed that he would meet Winston again in the place with no darkness, and having prior knowledge that the Ministry of Love had no windows; it was easy for me to conclude that they were on opposite sides. The physiological torture that O’brien inflicted on Winston was equal if not slightly more devastating to Winston than the constant pain he controlled with the dial. To me when Winston saw himself in front of the mirror that was the turning point. Where he realises that all hope is lost and he should just accept that 2 and 2 does in fact = 5. The wording in this passage almost had me believing… well not really but it is very convincing. Anyway I was disappointed that Winston gave in so easily and started believing in doublethink. But then again the book would have been longer and I don’t have the time to read it.
8 Torture part 1
January 21, 2009Winston’s torture was quite brutal. He was beaten repeatedly for what seemed like years and was forced to confess to crimes he did not commit even though he would be executed anyway. I found that this could have easily happened in any other country. Even Canada, although I do not think the Canadian government would have allowed it. Television depicts torture of innocents by gangs or big corporations all the time, the negative influence that has been broadcast may inspire others to act the same. This is somewhat disturbing as many people are easily convinced that everything they see on TV is real. In the book it mentions how the Soviets and Nazi’s tortured, and then vanished people who posed a threat. Those events were no doubt inspiration for writing a book about the future since it was right after WW 2 when this book was published and there was still a lot of tension in the world. I am running out of pages in the novel and can’t think of anything to elaborate on to make the entries longer…
7 “you are the dead”
January 21, 2009“We are the dead,” he said, We are the dead, echoed Julia dutifully. You are the dead, said an iron voice from behind them.” To me these were the best lines of the book and are the turning point in the novel. As stated in my last journal, I do admire Mr.Charrington’s comedic twist introduced via the picture frame. Anyway Winston’s entrance into the Ministry of Love was quite boring. He enters, waits a while, is hungry. The surprise in this segment of the novel came not from the vomiting women that crushed his lap, but by the presence of Parson’s. I could have imagined him being told on by his children so in a way it is dramatic irony as Winston would have never imagined this. I liked how the author showed a few people enter that Winston knew as to set how he felt about the newcomers. Then when Parson’s entered Winston stood abruptly in shock. Other than that the rest of this part of the book was very boring and extremely hard to read without falling asleep.
6 the book and capture
January 18, 2009Goldstien’s book is quite fascinating; to me it is the best part of the novel so far. I can completely relate to the logic and train of thought that the fictional author describes. I agree that the proles will one day rule, as they have, and that insanity can not last forever. If this book was spread around and not destroyed the party would have definitely not lasted as long as it did. The capture of Winston that morning was a refreshing twist in my opinion. I was getting bored of the story with no action; the one thing that surprised me was that Mr.Charrington was a member of the Thought Police. He had changed his whole appearance in order to lure any party members that went out of their way to buy something odd from the store. This dedication shows just truly how insane the inner party is and how it does not care what happens as long as they stay in power. Back to the book, the contradictory nature that is doublethink truely messed with my head. I tryed to think about it and figure out if it is actually possible to think of two opposite ideas and believe both of them to be true at the same time in one instance. To be honest i just could not do it. Anyway another really good 30 pages from the book.
5(brotherhood revealed)
January 17, 2009The brotherhood is, as Winston suspected, real. Julia and himself have been abducted into its ranks and will do anything to overthrow bigbrother and the inner party. The extremes that are involved in this process are quite insane, to me at least. To be willing to change your identity, appearance, life or limb without a moments pause takes dedication. It makes me wonder that if this story was real, would people have become so determined from the conditions they have had to live, that they would be willing to lose one or more of these attributes. I personally would not be willing to kill myself as to not betray the brotherhood. Hiding away seems like a more logical course of actions. Also why do they not get guns or other such weapons? It is mentioned that only 2% of the population of Oceania is inner party, so once again I find myself wondering why the proles don’t just take power. I like the way the brotherhood operates at any rate, their lack of structure and leaders makes them much harder to stop. This defence however could also lead to their downfall as they have no idea what the other members are up to. They could even accidentally betray fellow brethren to the thought police without the slightest idea that they are on the same side. I am eager to see what happens next.
4 (Julia and the brotherhood)
January 17, 2009Is the Brotherhood real, to Julia it isn’t… However I believe it must exist as the book would not be as long if all Winston did was secretly meet with Julia. I do not think that the brotherhood will be as fabulous as Winston makes it out to be since nothing in this book seems slightly amazing other than the floating fortresses. Julia, knowing only what the party has taught her does not believe in any organized rebellion, just small groups of people like themselves rebelling inside against the party. I can sympathize with idea that there is no brotherhood because of how the party functions. Taking every bit of information in the state and altering it to suit their needs as to not upset the public. Also the kind of over whelming control that the party has over the population with the use of telescreens, the thought police and their own children, makes it theoretically impossible for civil disobedience. When Julia joins the brotherhood, she will likely revolt against it too as it is just another party going for power.

January 10, 2009The proles have limitless potential when it comes to the idea of overthrowing the government; As Winston enlightened the reader that there were far more proles than party members. When I think back on the proles I hope I can get the image out of my head of Winston with a 50 year old prostitute, I know he was desperate but still… she had no teeth! The party is obviously not right for rule since no one conveys any emotion for fear of being vaporized. Their only forms of entertainment are public hangings, and nightly community lectures and table tennis games. This kind of recreation in no way encourages the healthy growth of a society. The children are living fictional proof of this; the one kid shot Winston the man who fizzed their sink, in the neck with a pellet gun, just because he missed the big hanging. I find this way of life extremely disturbing which is what is making it such a good book at the moment.

Thought Crime, the act of thinking of something that the party does not want you to imagine. Although one would think, how could they know what I’m thinking, Winston would probably just respond with “because they can”. These people, the Thought Police can somehow read your mind with ease and know everything and anything that you might be wanting to do or have done. In this place called London someone such as Winston has no freedom, with a telescreen in every room and a neighbour whose children might tell on you because they think you are evil. It makes me if the author knew how close he would come to predicting the future. In the 80s people were being controlled and were dying for no reason other than, “I think they did it”. I am fairly sure that people were watching, wire tapping, and looking through mail quite frequently around that time. So it seems that this author accurately predicted the lifestyle of the common “comrade” in some countries during the 80’s. ya… journal 1
